In response to the health crisis surrounding COVID-19, Conjunto Heritage Taller has made the difficult, but necessary decision to suspend all programming until further notice. More than half of the Conjunto Heritage Taller student body is made up of senior citizens, 65 years of age or older, many of whom have underlying, chronic health conditions such as diabetes. Additionally, 4 of our 5 instructors are also over the age of 65. The Center for Disease Control defines “older adults” as persons 65 years and older. Older adults, especially those who have underlying health conditions, are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Additionally, our intergenerational community also includes children, adolescents, and their families. Due to the suspension of our programming, they are missing out on their weekly accordion and bajo sexto lessons and community performances.
Since a large number of our student/instructor population falls into the vulnerable population, the suspension of Conjunto Heritage Taller programming was an imperative measure to protect our students, instructors, staff, and community. This decision, however, could have a particularly negative impact on our instructors, who are temporarily and indefinitely without work and income from their classes.
If you are in a position to donate, please consider donating to the Conjunto Heritage Taller Instructor Emergency Fund in support of our instructors who have been financially impacted by COVID-19. Our instructors, who have dedicated their time and talents to help preserve and perpetuate Conjunto music will, without a doubt, need our financial support to withstand these unexpected challenges.
All funds raised will be used to support Conjunto Heritage Taller instructors financially and to develop alternative programming opportunities for them to apply their skills in a safe way (i.e. remotely) and to offer virtual learning or performance opportunities to our students.
Conjunto Heritage Taller continues to monitor guidelines and recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and state and local governments as developments evolve surrounding COVID-19.
